CULTURAL FLUENCY

Teacher & Student Exchanges

How do we teach cultural literacy? How do we become fluent in our appreciation of difference and multiple world views? Exposure to new environments and cultures can have great benefits in expanding experience and understanding for students and teachers. In 2017, while serving as an advisor to the Misk Foundation, I designed a teacher internship/residency for 8 female Saudi teachers. The host sites included the Bank Street School for Children and Manhattan Country School. While heading Benjamin Franklin International School in Barcelona, I organized teacher and student exchange programs with the Bard High School Early College and Midwood High School. Travel, exposure and the experience of otherness is one of the great teachers for understanding and cultivating open-mindedness
